Yut Kee @ Jalan Dang Wangi

Sorry again for the lack of updates in my blog lately as I am tied up with my usual business trip and also renovation currently. But nevertheless, there's no rest for the wicked. So I was browsing the FB like millions of working people do nowadays during working hour and stumbled upon a picture upload by a friend. When I realized what it was, I am eager to try it out.

What is it? Well it's actually roast pork a.k.a siew yuk. What's so special bout it?

Well it's made like a Swiss Roll. Yup, you heard me right. The place is called Yut Kee which is located at the end of Jalan Dang Wangi. It's really easy to find actually, just Google it. Trust me, it's there.

Parking is a bitch over there as I managed to park right in front of the restaurant as it was an illegal spot. But since there are cars parked on both side, so I just joined them. Luckily I didn't get a summon during the lunch hour. The place is a very very old Hainanese restaurant which is established around 1926 if I am not mistaken. The place is not run by the grandson of the original owner.

The place has the portrait of the founder on the wall as you can see above. If you saw a guy at the cashier bearing 90% resemblance of the man, don't be afraid, it's just the grandson.

When I arrived, the place is already packed with customers and a lot of people are queuing up waiting for a table. Well, since I am alone, I managed to get a seat really easy. Shared a table with 3 ang moh who also ordered their special roast pork. From their conversation, they did complement the dish and it's one of the best they had.

Without wasting anytime, I had ordered their special roast pork (siew yuk) and a glass of cham ice. As you can see, the special roast pork is some sort like Hainanese Chicken Chop crossing over with Chinese Roast Pork. The special roast pork is served with potatoes and green peas at the side. Those are apple sauce on the roast pork. Not really fond of it, but luckily they gave me another bowl of brown (mushroom) sauce to go with it.
The roast pork is made like Swiss roll which makes it easier to slice and you have an even lean and fat all around. The outer layer is so damn crispy that it's addicting. I thought of ordering extra to take away but sadly it's not enough. People are queuing up waiting when I left.

Since the roast pork isn't that filling (for me), I had ordered their famous Hainanese Chicken Chop. The Ang Moh left and another group of people working from AIA sat down and looked at me when they saw I am starting on the chicken chop. Mind you, it's not that large of a portion actually. The chicken chop is covered in egg and fried to crisp and is served with mushroom sauce on top with the standard green peas and potatoes at the side. Doesn't really blow me away with this but just a decent plate of Hainanese Chicken Chop.

Third round? No I don't think so. I was tempted to ordered their roti babi. Yes, it's called roti babi which is pork bread/burger. But I heard that it's really filling and decided to call it off. Maybe on my next visit with more reinforcement. They are also famous for their belacan fried rice, hokkien noodle (yes, hainanese do serve Hokkien noodle too), kaya toast and swiss rolls.

The roast pork are only available every Friday and Sunday only. They will start serving the special roast port around 11.30am and most probably be finish around 12.30 noon. So better be quick as you might not get a seat in time to order a portion to eat. Overall, the trip over was worth it. Since I never really compliment any roast port dishes before. This is because, roast pork has little criteria which is freshly roasted and crispy outer layer. That is the most important for me. So when I saw how special this roast port is, I quickly make a trip over before you can even finish saying Siew Yuk. (Rating: 4.5 out of 5.0)

Grand Imperial Kitchen @ Empire Gallery

My last visit to Grand Imperial would be luncheon with my colleagues at BSC. This time around when I got an invitation for lunch again at their new outlet at Empire, I quickly said YES. When I arrived, the place was packed but luckily we managed to get a seat and straight away looked through their menu. From the menu, we could see that the restaurant focuses more on their individual super value set rather than their dim sum. Don't get me wrong, they still have dim sum but not as much as the one over at their other larger outlet.

The main objective of our trip over was to try out their so-called super value set. They have 10 value sets in their menu. Most of the sets price ranges from RM11.80++. They have the common, Roasted Pork rice, Curry Chicken, Yang Chow fried rice, Braised Ginger Duck, Lamb Belly, Chicken Curry Noodles, BBQ Sliced Pork Noodles, La Mian Soup with Preserved Vegetable & Shredded Pork and La Mian with Minced Meat with Mushroom.

The first that we ordered would be their famous Roasted Pork rice. The rice also come with fried egg. I think all of their set also come with fried egg. The roast pork although not as good as the one we had at BSC but still it's above average. Portion was alright I guess. My friend even ordered an extra bowl of plain rice and remember to get some extra sauce from them too. If you're really hungry don't order this.

I had decided to order their Yang Chow fried rice. I regretted ordering it when I saw the size of it. I was really hungry that afternoon and the portion was really small. Well, other than the portion which I didn't really satisfied with, the taste was really good and the prawns are fresh and plenty too. Remember to get plenty of chili oil from them to go with the fried rice. Again, don't order this if you are hungry.

I should had ordered this as the portion was really generous. This is their Curry Chicken Noodle. The noodle was at least 1.5 portion. The noodle is a bit different from the one that we had outside. It's really thin and not too soft. Just the way I like it. The curry chicken was strong of curry powder but still it's alright. I don't expect any authentic curry from a Chinese Restaurant anyway. Chicken was really generous too.

The Curry Chicken Noodle set also come with soup dumpling. And all cost the same as my fried rice and also roasted pork rice. You can order this if you're really hungry. Well, at least I think it's filling and worth my money.

Steamed Siew Mai with Prawns - RM4.80
We won't miss the chance to try out their famous dim sum and we decided to start with the basic. Their steamed Siew Mai with prawns isn't a fight to the one over at BSC but still really good comparing with others. Prawns are fresh and importantly it's not all wet like it's over cook.

Steamed Glutinous Rice - RM4.80
Next would be their Lou Mai Kai or steamed glutinous rice. Surprisingly it's really good. There's the usual mushroom, fried pork and chicken. The rice isn't that sticky though but still it's alright with me overall.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with the quality of the food as in their taste. Service I wasn't that satisfied. Well maybe they are still new since the restaurant had just open. The place was really pack throughout lunch hour. The restaurant isn't that large so it's called 'Kitchen' in their name. The wanna do some sort like a quick lunch outlet for their customers. I like that, cause you won't think that the place only serve expensive food and we can also have a taste of their good food with a reasonable price. (Rating: 4.0 out of 5.0)

Oriental Banquet @ SS19

Got invited by my ex-colleague to try out this restaurant which has this lunch buffet during the weekends. The buffet cost RM39.90++ and RM59.90++ depending on the type of starter you are having. And in this case the shark fin. The restaurant is located next to the ISS company or more familiar BAT Factory in Section 17. The restaurant is called Oriental Banquet. They actually changed from two different establishment before becoming the current. The place do looked more brighter and also grand than before after the renovation.

So what is available for the buffet? As you can see, the choices are quite wide for the price you're paying. The food mostly are those that you might get from wedding dinners. Now you can eat as much as you can on the food which you prefer during a banquet. The food are warm and they do replenish the tray once the food are almost finish.

Here are some of the small starters and appetizers which you can choose from.

Here are the desserts section. They have the lotus pancake which I really like. They have soup and also coffee/tea for you to drink on the side.

Here is the starter which we had choose, shark fin. It's thick and the amount of shark fin are moderate and accommodating.

This is one of the highlight of the buffet which is their Peking Duck. The ducks are freshly roasted and sliced for us to dine. As usual the Peking duck is accompanied with their special sauce and vege to eat together. Remember you need the onion as it really add a taste together with the meat and sauce.

Here are some of the food which I took which I prefer. My favorite would be the top left grilled pork. My gosh, it's so juicy and the combination of lean and fat pork are really fantastic. I totally forgot how many stick I had that day. Remember to get the chilly paste for all your fried food. It's really nice.

I was busy eating when I heard the Captain said something on the mic, "Come and get your fresh crispy Golden Piglet" OH~! This is good~! So I quickly walked over and queue up for my roasted pork.

This is the size of the Golden Piglet and the chef in action chopping and dividing.

Typically the roasted pig was really crispy but comparing to the one I had over at Grand Imperial few weeks back, this one lose out on the taste and slightly on the crispiness. But nevertheless, it's really good.

After all the fattening and filling luncheon, I'd decided to cleansed it all down with their Soya Bean which I topped it with a scoop of ice cream.

I think for buffet, the most important part is whether the food is worth the money you are paying and in this place, for me it's worth every penny. For RM39++ I can have Peking Duck and Roasted Pork and Shark Fin to name a few. The ambiance is good and clean. A good place to have lunch with parents and friends during the weekend. Another choice for wedding dinner too if you are alright with the location. (Rating: 3.8 out of 5.0)

Grand Imperial @ Bangsar

This is my second trip over Grand Imperial at Bangsar. Got an invitation for dim sum session with my 'snake kaki' last Friday afternoon. We arrived quite early before lunch hour so it wasn't that pack. The restaurant is located on the top floor of the shopping mall. There are only two Chinese restaurant over there being Ming Court the other one. As mentioned, the main objective for the day would be their dim sum and we tried to ordered as much as possible. So let the drum rolls.

Steamed 'Siew Mai' with Prawn - RM7.00
I think this is a must order dish if you're eating dim sum. So this is the first we ordered. Size is small but the content was really generous. The prawns are really fresh and springy. The fish eggs on top of the siew mai also looked so appetizing. We ordered a second for this dish.

Steamed Pork Ribs with Pumpkin in Black Bean Paste - RM6.30
Actually I am not into pork ribs but this plate of ribs really changed my perception. The pork ribs was really soft and don't stick to the teeth like the one that I had before. They had sliced pumpkin with black bean paste to go with the steamed pork ribs. Not bad at all.

Shanghai 'Xiao Loong Bao' - RM6.00
The dumpling actually wasn't that pricey as I thought. Although it's not as tasty as the one I had over at Dragon-I but I guess for the price you're paying, it's alright.

Steamed BBQ Pork Bun - RM6.00
These buns really taste very good. Maybe one of the best I had to date. The buns are soft and hot. The BBQ pork inside are juicy and aplenty too. Just the way I like it.

Shark Fin Dumpling Soup - RM12.00
This dish is called Koon Tong Kau in Chinese if you're wondering. Shark fin? Yup, there are moderate amount of shark fin inside. Other then that, there are sliced mushrooms and some other ingredients. Actually there are nothing much special bout this soup but we just wanted to try it out.

Steamed Beef Ball - RM6.00
When I first looked at the beef balls, I was really looking forward to it, but sadly it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I think it wasn't as pack and stuffed as I thought it would be.

Roasted Pork with Mustard Sauce
This plate of roasted pork was really good. The top skin was extra crispy and the bottom layer are soft and juicy. Portion wasn't that much so we ordered two plates. Actually they chopped off half of the pork as you can from the picture above. So it's really small.

Pig's Giblet Porridge - RM8.00
Actually it wasn't my custom to order porridge during my dim sum session but this bowl of porridge change my opinion. Other then the fact that the size of the porridge, but also the content of it. The fried crullers inside still are fresh and crispy which I really like. The porridge are so soft and tasty. Totally love it.

Steamed Glutinous Rice with Abalone - RM9.00
I am really into steamed glutinous rice if you been following my blog. Was really looking forward to the 'lou mai kai' but it isn't as good as I thought it would be. I mean it's OK, but it didn't blow me away with it.

Steamed 'Cheong Fan' with Prawns - RM8.00
They have three type of Cheong Fan namely, Spring Roll and BBQ and we ordered their recommendation which is Prawns. And I think the decision was right. The prawns are large, juicy and springy. But the cheong fan must be accompanied with their spicy paste.

Steamed Beancurd Skin Roll - RM7.00
To be frank this beancurd roll isn't my plate of dim sum. I like my bean curd skin roll to be sweet and sour and maybe a bit spicy. This is a bit plain.

Japanese Cucumber with Ham
OK, I am not too sure what is this dish called actually. Basically it's basically Japanese Cucumber roll with ham. The dish is topped with some mint sauce. Isn't that bad but also not that good either.

Baked BBQ with Pork Pastries - RM6.00
Trust me, the size are really that small. And there are only 4 pieces only. Imagine char siew in fried bun. The outer skin are crispy and the pork are juicy inside. Not bad.

Steamed Prawn Dumpling - RM7.00
We ordered this almost to the end of our 'expedition'. Isn't really good actually. A bit disappointed of the dumpling cause there wasn't much to look forward about.

Egg Yolk Bun
I am not sure what is the exact price for the buns but it comes in a set of 3 buns. This is my first taste of 'Lau Sa'. Actually this bun is really good but since we ate a lot so this is a bit too much for me.

Deep Fried Salad Prawn - RM7.00
This isn't my plate of dim sum also. They didn't even gave us any mayo to go with it. So it's a bit dry when we consumed it. Nothing much special bout it.

Chilled Pomelo with Mango Cream - RM6.00
This is one of their famous dessert. Portion is sufficient for a single person but we did shared the dessert as we ordered three. This is actually one of HK famous dessert. The taste of mango was really soothing and not too sweet. Friend did mentioned it was a bit different from the one he had over at HK.

Chilled Avacado Cream with Sago - RM7.00
This is another recommended dessert by the captain. You can really taste the avacado cream but again not too sweet. But I don't think everyone would like it as not everyone are into avacado.

Chilled Lemon Grass Jelly with Sea Coconut - RM6.00
Actually I was really looking forward to this dessert as I like sea coconut. Again, not everyone like this dessert as it has lemon grass. At least that is my friend's feedback. A cool soothing dessert.

At the end of the lunch, we were all full and really satisfied with most of the food that we had. I could say that this could be one of the best dim sum restaurant I went to lately. Would really recommend to my friends who like dim sum. The damage for all the lunch come about RM160++. But it was worth the money as what we had was really fresh and filling.
