Yummy Duck Roast House @ Kuchai Lama

To be honest I came across this place from the paper I bought this morning. Read half way through and looking at the time, it's almost lunch hour and decided to bring the whole family over to try it out. It's a new (3 months old) restaurant called Yummy Duck which is located at Kuchai Lama (previously the night market place). Arrived around noon and the place wasn't that pack, so I was thinking if it's really as good as it's said it would be. Nevertheless, I never judge a place just on what I read. So I give it a try and see how it goes.

From what I read, the place is headed by it's director William Low and his older brother Kang Man. The former 41-year old started his food business as a commis in Regent Kuala Lumpur's Lai Ching Yuen or formerly known as Grand Millennium. He came out after two years of working with Chef Mak Thong and started off his first chicken rice stall near the Sentul market and finally ended up here after persuasion by the siblings. As the name goes, their roast duck would be the main attraction of the place but in reality people prefer their roast pork or siew yuk more.

As you can see, they served roast duck, pork, siew yuk and sliced Chinese sausage. I am not sure if they have roast chicken or not as I didn't ordered any. So let's get down to business now.

Spicy Minced Pork Pure Egg Noodle - RM 8.80
Babe wanted to try out their spicy minced pork egg noodle and the portion was really generous. It may look simple but the chili paste which they used for the noodle is not that bad. A bit oily but other than that, it's alright. As mentioned, the noodle are all imported in from Hong Kong and not made locally. So do try it.

Combo Pure Egg Noodle - RM 11.80 + RM2.80 (extra noodle)
I think this is a must order if you wanted to try out all their best roast duck and pork in the house. As you can see the portion of the noodle is really plenty as I had ordered double noodle or 'ma mee'. The waiter confirmed with us twice before he bring in the plate and I know why. Cause it's really a lot. The noodle is very tangy and not too soft and it's so thin. The noodle is really long and look uncut in between. So it's really good.

Roasted Pork Shoulder or Char Siew
Let's go into detail of the combo plate. The char siew is my favorite actually from the three. It's covered by caramelized soy coating and also the texture is so tender. I specifically ordered half lean and fat and that is what I got. Superb. Gonna be back again to try it out with plain rice next time.

Roast Pork or Siew Yuk
As I mentioned earlier, they are famous for their roast pork so I was really eager to try it out. It's not bad but maybe not as good as described. But still above average portion of roast pork. The upper layer is crispy and the salty part of the pork is marinated nicely. This is because the cook had to control the fire during the preparation nicely. As over heat will make the skin turn black and under cook will make the pork tasteless.

Roast Duck
As for the roast duck, it got the thumbs up from my SIL and babe. Strong scent of five scent and garlic powder and lam yue (red preserved bean curd) which is the base ingredients. The salt which makes the skin crispy plays a crucial part during the preparation too. So at the end, a yummy plate of roast duck.

 Dumpling in Soup
We had ordered a side dish to go with the noodle too. Their dumplings are really large and the prawn meat inside was really fresh and you can really taste the prawn inside. As I had tried some which you can't even tell if it's prawn or pork or whatever inside. Not bad. Their deep fried silver fish, soft shell crabs and chicken wings stuffed with glutinous rice are some of the popular ones over there.

At the end of our lunch, the place was totally pack till the outside. Both the brothers are preparing non stop inside the counter chopping the roast pork and duck for all the customers. Business is really good. The price isn't that expensive actually if you think of it. I mean RM11.80 for a double portion pure egg noodle with roast duck, pork and char siew. Do try the place out if you are around the area. I will definitely be back to have lunch one of this day with my lunch kakis. (Rating: 4.2 out of 5.0)

Yik Kee Restaurant @ TTDI

This was my first trip over to this restaurant which is located at the saw row as the famous Loh Shi Fun at Taman Tun. It's called Yik Kee and from what I saw inside, it's main branch is located at Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands. The famous place where you eat fresh patin fish, fresh prawns noodle, shark fins, Buddha Jump Over The Wall (sorry, don't know how to translate this but you know what I mean). So me and my boss went in and browsed through the menu and decided to go with their special lunch set for 3 person.

Soup of The Day
The soup of the day was the winter melon with chicken. It's fresh but nothing special bout it since it comes with the set. As usual, a good soup always warm up my tummy before a storm of more good food to come.

Steamed River Patin Fish with Superior Soya Sauce
We were quite eager to taste the fish as fresh river patin are quite pricey in the market. So how fresh and good this dish, are the main question. Portion was good for three person with sufficient portion as the fish isn't too skinny. It is considered fresh but I had better. But considering the place and all, it's quite good. Combined together with their superior sauce, nice.

Yik Kee Roast Duck
I can say that the portion wasn't that large but just enough for the three of us. It's not hard and not too tender but right in the middle. No special sauce is given for the duck. Skin isn't that crispy and the meat isn't that strong of a herbal taste. Just your normal plate of Roast Duck.

Fresh Water Prawns Fry Noodle
We didn't ordered any rice to go with all the dishes as we thought that the portion of noodle from this dish would suffice. From the first look, it isn't that much but when we start to eat all the dishes one by one, it's quite filling. The fresh water prawns is just like the name said, fresh and large. Noodle was just alright. Strong scent of the egg yolk in the noodle. Some sort like Mun Yee Mee that we normally eat with Fresh Prawns in this case.

Overall, we have a good filling meal. The whole meal isn't to say cheap as there were the Patin fish, Fresh Prawns and Roast Duck. The whole meal cost us RM118++ and when you add tit bits and tea into the bill, it adds up to RM131. Expensive? Maybe. But it's claimable, so I guess it's alright with me. Their shark fin will dry you up around RM98/portion while the Buddha Over The Wall cost around RM70 - RM80. (Rating: 3.8 out of 5.0)

Sunrise Restaurant @ Sea Park

This has got to be one of the best shop which sells roast duck in Petaling Jaya area. The name of the shop is Sunrise which is located at S.E.A Park. I think most of the local people would at been here before or at least heard of their name. It's been a while since I last visited the place as it's always pack with a queue during lunch hour. But since babe wanted to have lunch early today, so I had suggested this place. Arrived around half past noon and the place was already full. Managed to get a table while sharing with another two.

As usual, I had ordered 2 pax lower halves of the roasted duck. I think most of the people who like duck would order the same as me. They even throw in some extra roasted duck skin on top of the dish. Yummy! So how was the taste? Well it was a bit disappointing for me as it wasn't as crispy as I had before. I think the one I had at Loong Foong (which is just nearby) was better. I know that the taste wasn't as strong as Loong Foong but I was disappointed on the non crispy skin the most. Maybe the one that I had wasn't roasted fresh from the over? Cause I saw them carrying some out after I had ordered mine. Would give them the benefit of the doubt in this case. As I had tried many times and it was satisfying. (RM29/plate)

The shop opens at 11.30am and will close before 2pm I guess. Actually they will close whenever the ducks are sold off. You can see the women chopping up the roasted ducks non-stop during the whole time. The whole lunch cost me RM33 inclusive of two herbal teas and rice. Will definitely be returning again to try their duck again as I believe it's better than what I had today. For those who haven't try it before, you can locate them at the below address:

Loong Foong Restaurant @ Taman Paramount

This has got to be the Top 3 best roast duck in town. It's on par with Sunrise and also the one at Damansara Uptown. The place I am referring to is Loong Foong at Taman Paramount. At a normal day you could see a queue starting from around 5pm and tables getting filled. During pre-CNY you can't even get a portion of duck if you didn't pre-order it earlier. Business is really that good over here. Believe me, I seen it.

So me and my babe ordered bottom halves portion for 2 pax. I had always said that I am into crispy skin type of roast duck, but this is an exemption. The scent and taste of herbs on the meat is so darn strong that you can smell it when you entered the restaurant. The meat is so tasty and juicy when you sink your teeth into it. But the portion was a bit stingy for us. So I wasn't that full at the end the meal. (RM 14/2 pax bottom halves)

So since I am not full I had decided to take away half a duck (bottom halves). Just kidding, this is for my future in laws. I had ordered bottom halves and the price is RM 24, but if you ordered half bottom half top it's RM 22. But at the end, this half a duck went down my stomach during 2nd round of dinner with my bro.

Other than roast duck they do sell Acar to go with it. But I am not into it so I didn't order. What makes the duck so tasty, well I guess it's the spice they use and also their expertise in controlling the fire during roasting time. So it's not that dry when you eat it. For those who live in PJ should have heard of this place before. Better be here quick as I think their duck will be finish around 7pm or so. Rating: 4.0 out of 5.0

Duck King @ Jaya One

This is my second visit over this place and this time around it was for my birthday cum loh sang session with my gym mates. The place was fully booked and we needed to wait for around 20mins for our table. Decided to go for the CNY set as there were 13 of us and we didn't want waste time thinking what to order and all.

First dish was the Fresh Salmon Fish Yee Sang. Trust me, there were a lot of salmon and for once, there were a lot of those crispy biscuit thingy in the yee sang. It tasted very nice or is it cause we're too hungry at that time?

Braised Shark's Fin Soup with Crab Meat and Dried Scallop. For once it's not that starchy but a bit too watery. But not much comment here as it's comes with the set so we didn't expect that much.

This is their house specialty which is the Duck King Roasted Duck. It's not that crispy on the outer skin but the duck is very nice and so is the sauce that comes with it. Juicy and tasty which it supposed to be.

Stoned Grilled Drunken Prawns. We can smell the scent of the rice wine from far away before the dish is even out. The soup was really strong of the herbal ingredients and also wine rice. Prawns were really fresh just the way it should be. Very nice.

Claypot baked Cananda Cod Fish with Japanese Soya Sauce. This was really too. The cod fish was fresh and the sauce was thick and not too salty. Truly a good dish to eat.

Stewed Dried Oyster, Shell Abalone and Black Mushroom with Cabbages. The sauce is thick and the mushroom were plenty and so is the abalone too. But one of the friend told me it's actually abalone mushroom which was served. Anyway, it's was a nice dish but I don't really fancy a dish which was that starchy.

Steamed Rice with Hong Kong Preserved Rice. What is a feast without some steamed rice. It's served in a big nice bowl which I would like to bring back actually. Topped with slices of fried egg it looks better than it taste. The dish was tasteless sadly to say. But I managed to take in 3 bowls as I added some X.O spicy sauce. I can eat anything with that sauce.

Before the last dessert came, we decided to take out the dessert made by Jacque. Thanx a lot for her effort again and I like the cake very much. FYI, it's moist chocolate cake which she baked before she came out. Really appreciate the effort she put in on this cake.

Trust me, the picture doesn't served the cake justice as it was really nice and she even brought some vanilla ice cream for us to go with the cake. Nice~!!!

Deep Fried Chinese New Year Cake with Yam. This is a hot dish which was served together with the dessert. I think all of us really like this dish as we don't get to eat this other then CNY.

Last but not least the Chilled Sweetened Glutinous Ball with Pamelo and Mango Sago. This I don't like that much as I don't really like pamelo and not into glutinous ball too. And the dessert was a bit bitter due to the pamelo. But the rest liked it very much. So it depends on individual I guess.

All together the service was alright and we were quite satisfied too. The whole meal cost us RM1,100. Well I guess it's a bit pricey but it was CNY and the food was very fresh too. So I guess you can't really put a price tag on tag. Will return to try their other dishes with my family one day. Rating: 3.8 out of 5.0

Restaurant Weng Kee

This is a placed which was recommended by a friend not long time ago. I had always patronized this area at Section 17, P.J for years but never imagine that this corner lot sells Roasted Duck. So I had decided to have lunch with a friend of mine, Ken and try it out. The name of the shop is Weng Kee. It's located at the wet market in Section 17.

Let's get into the food. I saw that they offer more than just roast duck. They also sells roast pork (char siew) and also sliced stuffed pork (yuk cheong). So I had ordered the combination of the three and make it for 2 person portion. To be frank I am not sure what is so famous bout his duck. Other than it's fresh scent of roast and juicy meat.

This is the roast pork and also sliced stuffed pork but a bit little. I know it's expensive but can we make it a bit less pathetic? Roast pork not that special and juicy but still alright. Stuffed pork was a bit hard but still able to sink your teeth in it.

This vegetable came as a SOP for the whole dish. We didn't ordered it but it came together. Anyway, it's rare for me eating roast duck, pork or even chicken accompanied with vegetable.

Altogether we had spent RM22 inclusive of two glasses of herbal tea. I think I still prefer other places like Sunrise or even the roast duck at Damansara Utama compared to here. But surprisingly there is a lot of customers and some times I even saw the place pack and customers need to wait for a table. Weird! Will I return? Slim chance. (Rating: 3.5 out of 5.0)

Duck King

An old friend had invited me for lunch today. She told me that there's this place called Duck King. OMG~! A place pro-claimed themselves duck king. This I had to see and try. The place is located inside Jaya One. Just park in the basement go to Ground floor. It's behind Starbucks. You can't miss it. I was quite surprised with the whole place as there were so many restaurants to try out.

OK, now back to the main dish. Like the name says, the place served duck but not just duck but also Hong King Dim Sum, Noodles & Porridge and full varieties of Chinese cuisine. Their menu is damn big and one thing caught my eye at the bottom of the menu. It's written, "This Menu Cost RM1500++". WTH!! I am not sure it's the menu cost or the total cost of the dishes in the menu.

Since my friend, Tania had tried out the place before so I let her decide what to ordered. For the main dish we had ordered 1/4 portion of Roasted Duck. Well the duck was nice and juicy as it should be. Skin is crispy and sweet. Not bad at all.

She recommended the Grilled Squid with Butter and Salt. I like my squid deep fried but grilled is alright with me. The portion was quite large for two of us. Taste is salty but nice. Duh!

We had also go for the waitress recommendation of their house specialty vegetable. It's organic and it's very special as I haven't tried this vegetable before. She told me the name but I don't really remembered and heard it before. It's not in the menu but most importantly it tasted really nice.

As for the rice they have four type to choose from. Plain, Oily, Minced Pork and Pork Oil. All are steamed in a pot of rice so the fragrance of the pork sips into the rice and it's quite nice if you really like pork.

The place was already packed when we arrived around noon. You need to have reservation if you wanted to sit inside. Even during dinner the place is packed needless to say weekends. They do served their specialty Peking Duck, Shark Fin, Geoduck, whole lot of fresh ocean fishes and also dim sums. There is this dish called Barbeque Meat Five Combination which I would like to try out on my next trip. The whole lunch cost both of us RM87 inclusive of a pot of tea. Tummy was full before I could finished off the rice. A very satisfied customer if I would add. Most definitely coming back with my family on one of the weekends. (Rating: 3.8 out of 5.0)

Fatty Duck Teo Chew Stewed Duck - Taman Paramount

This is a placed which my brother like to visit a lot. As for me, I don't really fancy Stewed Duck but rather like Roasted Duck. But since it's so nice (according to them) so I think I might as well introduce this place for those who like Stewed Duck in Teo Chew style. The placed is located at the corner shop in Taman Paramount.
The place served rice and also their specialty white porridge which surprisingly tasted very good. It's those porridge with a lot of water rather than those thick one which I prefer. Their dishes is shown in front of the stall. So you can choose whatever you like and order.
So here's what my family had ordered for the night. This is their special salted vegetable which is a must if you eating here.
This is one of Teo Chew dish which you must order. It's their stewed eggs.
Here's the main dish. It's their Stewed Duck. The gravy is very tasty and not too thick. Meat was tender and not too dry. But still I like my duck roasted.
This is another must order dish which is the stewed pork. I am not sure if the gravy was the same as the eggs or not but it is really nice. You must mix the fat pork together when you order as it tasted better that way.
So what is Teo Chew dish without Tofu. What can I say, but it's soft. But I don't really dig this type of tofu though.

The whole dinner cost us RM52.80 and I think it's quite worth it with all the dishes that we ordered. There's vegetables, pork, duck and also eggs. What a balance good healthy dinner. And yes, we're all full and satisfied. But I prefer stewed pork which was prepared by my own grandma anytime. No doubt about it. (Rating: 3.5 out of 5.0)
