Goon Wah Restaurant @ Kuchai Lama

I read about this place from some where online and decided that I definitely need to pay the place a visit. Why? This is because I saw their Claypot Loh Shue Fun (CLSF). It's very hard to find a place that serve real good CLSF anymore. The one over at TTDI, Mama Kitchen's CLSF is not up to standard anymore and they even branch out to Bandar Puteri now. So when I saw that this place serve some really special CLSF, I had to give it a try. Quickly gave my ex-colleagues a call and they are all set. Similar with me, they like to travel around and eat too. I heard that the place is pack on a weekday, so we decided to arrive early, 12noon and luckily we managed to get a table outside.

This is their famous CLSF. Well actually they are more famous for their fishhead noodle but I like this one more. The CLSF is served on top of a stove which is still burning when it's served. Wicked~! The noodle they used seemed to be a bit short and not like the usual ones that we had, so I guess they might manufactured the noodle themselves. This is not your typical CLSF as it's not wet and there are no raw egg on top of it. It's dry and topped with minced pork and crispy fried "kung yiew chie" (forgot how to pronounce it in Ang Moh, sorry). It looked simple but it tasted really nice.

Here's a closer look of the CLSF. The portion is not that large actually. I think I can alone finish the whole pot up all by myself. But then again, we ordered a single pax. You need to quickly stirred the noodle around to mix it with the sauce and minced pork before the bottom part get over burn. Remember the fire is still burning hot underneath. Highly recommended.

Well, since it's highly recommended and seemed like every table has at least one pot of this, we decided to ordered one and give it a try. It's their famous fishhead noodle with XO sauce. As you can see the pot is filled with fried fishhead. There's the usual salted vegetables, tomatoes and onions. The soup was really nice but one of my friend did mentioned that he preferred the one over at Desa Petaling while the other differ. As for me, I am alright with  this since I am not that big of a fan of fishhead noodle. How cool if they can put a stove like the CLSF underneath this dish too. ^^

This is another specialty in the house. It's their fried mixed intestines. A year ago, if you asked me if I would order this? Hell NO. But now, I am really into this dish. It's really a simple dish. I had tried those which are fried to crisp and now this is fried with garlic and "kong yew chie" again. Damn, the sauce is really good. I could finish a bowl of rice just with the sauce alone. Both my friends agreed with me on this. So I am not delusional. haha!

Another specialty would be their Wu Tao Khao Yuk or Yam with braised pork. OK, I take pork in any form so this is again one of my favorite. But I don't like the yam so I just took the pork and leave the yam behind.

Eating the Khao Yuk alone would be a bit strong, so it is served together with man tao or steamed bun.

Overall this dish seemed normal. Not to get over-excited with it but still it's one of the recommended dish over here. So we tend to try whatever the waitress recommended to us. Managed to finished the pork but not the yam.

Looked at those pork and fats. Best khao yuk should have 60% lean meat and 40% fats. Add some yam on it and wrapped it with that hot steamy bun. Take a bite into it and you are almost in heaven. Pork heaven that is. Note that the pork isn't that oily on the sauce. So you won't feel so fulled after eating it.

We managed to finished off the whole 4 dishes (except some yam) up and less than 30mins. The place served their food quite fast. We ordered small portion for all of the dishes since we wanted to try as many dishes as possible.

We cleansed all the oily food down with a glass of ice lime with asam boy. Damn it's refreshing. But the glass did seemed a bit "thin" for a place like this.

This is how the crowd looks like around 12.45. Some of the tables are even reserved. Maybe it's a good idea to reserve a table before you come if you have a large crowd.

The place is located over at Kuchai Lama. It's not that hard to locate it. Well, if you know your way around that area that is. The whole meal cost us RM60. I guess it's reasonable. I heard that the place only opens on weekdays from morning till 3pm if I am not mistaken or 2pm. The service was friendly and accommodating. Will I return? Hell YES!

CA Food Enterprise @ Sunway Mentari

I heard of Johor style Bak Kut Teh before in some TV shows previously but didn't had the chance to try it out. I had traveled down South for so many times and didn't once I had BKT over there. So funny that my first taste would be in Sunway. It's a new restaurant located at Sunway Mentari. This place is serving Johor style BKT which was recommended by my ex-colleague. It's lucky that me and my ex-colleagues had a lot in common in term of food.

Bak Kut Teh with Everything - RM8/pax
There were 10 of us so we had ordered 2 pots of this BKT. The soup as you can see is quite clear compared to the one we normally had over here. The one we had over here had strong thick soy sauce taste whereas theirs are more lighter and the taste is more strong but towards herbal side. The ribs are soft and the lean and fat layer of pork are very tender.

Lettuce - RM8/Large Plate
We had ordered some vegetable to go with the pork. As usual, some fried onions on top and soy sauce to add some taste.

Rice Wine Chicken - RM 8.50/small or RM 11.50/large
This is one of their famous dish over here. It's their Rice Wine Chicken. The ladies like this pot of chicken a lot. The chicken are really tender and get this, it's soft and juicy too. It's really rare to have such soft and tender chicken cooked in rice wine. Definitely a recommended dish.

Sesame Chicken - RM 8/small or RM 11/large
This is the second famous dish from their restaurant. This is my personal favorite too. The sesame sauce is smell so good and the chicken again is so tender and soft. The sauce isn't that thick that the sauce hides the taste of the chicken. But it's just right. This has got to be my favorite dish of the day.

Steamed Fish Head in Garlic - RM 18/small or RM20/large
I know it's weird to see these kind of dishes in a Bak Kut Teh restaurant but heck, it's nice eating something else other than pork. This fish head isn't that large but the garlic are plenty and get this, it's not that spicy as it looks. But the taste of garlic is really strong. Wondering if it's from the famous Bukit Tinggi hills. It was just alright for me as I am not so into fish head anyway.

The aftermath.
One thing we don't like bout the place was the size of the pot which the tea are being served. It's so darn small. They don't cater for large crowd maybe. So we need to order 2 pots of tea for the 10 of us. Other than that, it's alright. Service are considered good but again I think they should hire more workers in the future when the crowds are getting more.

This is where the Bak Kut Teh is being prepared and also the rice wine chicken. Still using the traditional charcoal, slow but the dish taste damn nice.

The place is still new so I think it needs time for people to get to know bout it. The total damage for the lunch come close to RM110 if I remembered it correctly. Please be reminded that we ordered 2 sets each of the dishes above (except the chicken). Sad thing is that, they don't serve dry Bak Kut Teh but they had compensated that with their Sesame Chicken which is really good. Definitely bringing my family over to have a taste of this restaurant during the weekends. (Rating: 4.0 out of 5.0)

Restaurant Kepala Ikan Chan Sow Lin @ Jalan Chan Sow Lin

Was out with my manager and he asked where to have lunch. Finally decided to have some fish head at Chan Sow Lin since we're passing by Sg. Besi heading to Kajang from KL center. Was looking around the area as both of us had not been to the shop for ages. So I turn ON my Garmin and search for the shop using the POI. Found one with the name Chan Sow Lin and the rest was history. This might not be the original under the big tree fish head but still it's worth mentioning.

Steamed Sauce Fish Head
Get seated and the boss straight away came over and asked how do we want our fish head to be. Looked around and saw that there was at least one fish head on each table. There's even one with two fish head with only two person eating. He recommended their specialty steamed sauce and within minutes (5minutes maybe) the fish head arrives. It's not that large but just enough for both of us to have a taste of it. The sauce was really something. Bit of salty and spicy with lots of parsley and slices chillies in it. Fish is really fresh from the soft meat that we sink our teeth into.

Yau Mak with Garlic
Had to have my favourite vegetable to go with the rice. So ordered their Yau Mak which is alright and not too oily.

Yong Tau Foo
The boss had recommended a few dishes but we had go with the Yong Tau Foo as there was just the two of us and the other dishes seemed a bit too much for us. The Yong Tau Foo are hand made by themselves and worth trying out. This is a small portion just for two pax. Fresh and tasty is what I can say.

The restaurant is divided into two part with one side air condition and the other non, for smokers. You have to pay first for the drinks as it's from different establishment. Place is clean and not too crowded during lunch hour. Food are served fast and fresh. Price is reasonable as for all that above, it's just RM32. You can find a lot of fish head restaurants or stall around Chan Sow Lin as it's fame for it but not many are as good as the original one. There's one called F4 Fish Head at USJ 1 area which is worth mentioning too. Located at the factory area with some really good dishes. Will try to go over again and post a blog bout the place in the future. (Rating: 3.8 out of 5.0)
