Yap Eng Bak Kut Teh @ Taman Sentosa, Klang

Finally I had managed to blog about this restaurant. What's so special? Well this is where it all started or from what I heard. The Dry Bak Kut Teh from Klang. Location, Taman Sentosa. Name, Yap Eng. Everyone who is a BKT lover should have heard about this place. This is the best dry BKT I had in years. Many had come near, Yip Weng in Bandar Puteri, Zheng Jia in Pusat Bandar Puchong or even Yap Chuan in Bukit Raja. But the best still comes down to this place. Had my first years ago and fell in love with their dry BKT.

When I arrived, the place was packed and we didn't have any table to seat. Well rather the place was short handed and we need to wait for them to clear the table for us. Order took around 10 minutes to arrive but it was worth it. There were only one main cook who does all the cooking on the dry bak kut teh.

 Dry Bak Kut Teh
This is their famous Dry BKT which everyone was waiting for. I had ordered for 2 pax as I know any smaller won't be enough for my craving. Fyi, you can't request for the type of pork as they will just serve you whatever they have. I like my pork to be half lean and half fat and this was alright. I was a bit disappointed this time around as the taste wasn't that strong compared to the one I had previously but still it's very delicious. I think I finished off the whole pot myself that day. Yes, it was that good.

Wet Bak Ku Teh
Babe wanted some traditional BKT as she's not so into the dry like me. Ordered the pot with everything in it including Enoki mushroom.Scent isn't that strong compared to the one I had over at Yap Chuan or Yip Weng but still the pork are really soft and tender. Didn't ordered any vegetable that day as we were really full after the whole pork meal.

When we left, the place was still pack. A bit hot that afternoon but it's all worth it. Saw some cars with Singapore license plates too while I am leaving. Other than BKT, they do serve steamed bean curd, vegetables and otak-otak like any other BKT restaurant. So for those who never tried this place before, do make a trip down Klang and decide for yourself if it's that good. (Rating: 4.5 out of 5.0)

Axian Dim Sum @ Bandar Puteri

I first come to know about this place few months back when it's just operated. If I am not mistaken they started operation on the 11 June this year. But business is really good from the looks of it. I had passed by a few times before this and it was always packed. So this time around, I decided to give it a try although I am not packing in with a lot of expectation. If you still doesn't know by now, the place is owned by the TV host, Axian. But that is not the reason I am there. Just wanna know what's the hype about.

First on the table would be their fried yam with char siew. Skin is crispy and the pork is warm, in other words, it's fresh. But sadly the taste isn't that attracting as it would be. This is my own opinion, but I like my char siew sauce to be red. Again, it was a bit plain to me. (RM3.50)

This is a must order for me in any dim sum restaurant, Loh Mai Kai. From the texture or the looks of it, it's quite delicious. And surprisingly it is. The glutinous rice is not under cook but one set back is the sauce isn't that evenly distributed into the rice. So you got uneven taste all over the rice which  I hate. The mushroom and char siew are fresh and delicious, luckily. (RM3.50)

I think they called this their Sakura Pork or what we like to called Siew Mai. Fresh and warm with the pork inside being soft. I like this one. Nothing spectacular but it's alright. (RM3.50)

Wanted to try out their char siew bao and was startled that it comes in 3. But luckily it's not that large. The char siew was alright but I like the one from Jin Xiang actually. One other thing is the bun sticks to the teeth meaning that the flour or the process of steaming the bun isn't that good. Well this is what babe said as she's in the flour industry. (RM4.50)

Yes, siew loong bao. It's freshly made once you order it. Although I need to wait for this dish but I thought it would be good. The soup was a plenty but you can't really compare this with Dragon-I actually. (RM6.00)

Babe wanted to order this but didn't know what it's called and I was trying to figured out what she wanted and finally I got what she wanted, Steamed Pork Ribs. I am not a big fan of Pai Kuat but I am willing to try. It's fresh but a bit too annoying to me as it always stick in between my teeth. But babe like it. (RM4.50)

Overall, the food are average but the service is really good. The environment is clean and the service is fast too. Although they occupied two lot and road side, but they are still full. I think people really like something new in the neighborhood. This is nothing special but just another dim sum restaurant who happen to be own by a famous food TV host. Try it out and let me know what you think. (Rating: 3.8 out of 5.0)

New York New York @ 1Utama

I had always wanted to try this place out since the first day I saw it. The place is called New York New York which is located inside 1Utama. It's outside Cold Storage and as you can see, the place serve burgers, pastas, sandwiches and pizzas. Arrived around noon time but isn't that pack, so we're seated on the large table.

I like their menu as it's called the 'little' black book. For those who don't get what it means, DUH?!! Anyway, the place origin from Singapore and not really New York for your information. But I am willing to try out anything new. Browsed through the menu and decided to order a main and another pizza to share.

Root Beer with Vanilla Ice Cream Float - RM9.80
Was browsing through the menu for my drink when I came across a big picture of this gigantic root beer. OK, this is so gonna be my drink today. Something similar to A&W's root beer minus the cold mug of course. Totally satisfying cleansing my thirst after a big meal with this baby.

Beefeater - RM14.90
My friend wanted something simple and decided to just order their sandwich. You can choose white, whole wheat or focaccia bread for your sandwich. It's actually roast beef with cheese, sauteed onions and honey mustard sauce. The roast beef was sliced and portion was alright. It's quite filling too. As mentioned, simple and nice for a quick bite.

Juicy Burger Supreme - RM16.50
This is one of their recommended burger in their menu. It's a pure beef patty with tomato and mustard on top. My favorite would be the fries on the side. The fries are freshly fried and crunchy, nice. The beef patty was generous and juicy. The only set back would be it's too soft and fall off once bite into which is really hard to eat. I think Chilies burgers are still the best in town for me.

Pepperoni Pizza - RM9.80
This is the beef pepperoni, tomato sauce, mozzarella with fresh herbs. Was bit disappointed when we saw the pizza as we thought that it would be thin crust but rather it's in thick bread. And the bread seemed like the one we bought from the cold storage. Pepperoni wasn't as much as shown too. But for the price we paid, it's quite worth it I guess. You get around 8 slices altogether from the pizza if I am not mistaken.

The ambiance is good and not too pack so we can have a decent conversation without have to shout at each other. Like the decoration they did with the place and also the sofas too. Looked very Ang Moh (Western). Food wise, other then the pizza, both the burger and sandwich are alright. Sadly they don't have any Carbonara pasta in their menu, Alfredo would be the closest I get to the cream sauce. A good place to catch a quick lunch and laid back on a Friday afternoon. Giant Bowl @ SS2

I still remember a few months back when a reader commented in one of my post to introduce some vegetarian restaurant. This is because I am such a meat eater from all the post that I had from the first day. I think this is the first vegetarian post I am posting from the 200 over posts I had in here. So anyway, the place is located at SS2 called Giant Bowl. I heard from my friend that the original branch is located at Kuchai Lama. I think this restaurant had been in SS2 for quite some time. I had visited the place for numerous time during luncheon but normally I had their Pan Mee Soup but today we had something different. We had decided to order some dishes to share together hence the interest to blog bout the food over here.

Brown Rice - RM 1.50/plate
I heard that consuming brown rice doesn't really make someone gain much weight. Is this true? Anyway, we opted for the brown rice to the normal white one. But for the price we're paying, it's nothing ordinary bout it.

Fried Bean Curd with Minced Meat - RM 9.90
As I mentioned before, it's a vegetarian shop so that stuff on top isn't really meat. The bean curd was really normal and nothing much to brag about. Portion was enough for the three of us.

Claypot Bak Kut Teh - RM 9.90
This is recommended by my friend who had tried it before this. The claypot consists of fried bean curd, mushrooms and some other meat like made of flour of course. The taste of the soup was really nice and it really taste like the real thing. But sadly no refill.

Curry Mutton - RM 9.90
This is another recommended dish in the house. The potatoes is real but the mutton is made of flour. But the gravy was really nice and the scent of curry powder was just nice. This is a nice dish to eat with any rice. But together with BKT is a bit strange. We ordered it cause we wanted to try out as many as possible that day.

Potato Vegetable - RM 8.90
I am not sure what is the name of this vegetable in English. I think it's called sayur ubi or sort in BM. The portion was really large. We were so surprised when we saw the dish. I ate so much but at the end we still can't finish it. It's plain and simple plate of dish which is good for the health.

Overall, the lunch was really fulfilling and we felt really healthy after the meal. LOL! It's nice having some vegetarian lunch or dinner once in a while. But I think it's best if we order more of vegetable rather than those flour made food which look like meat. I think a lot of people know bout this place and even tried it before. So do let me know what you think. (Rating: 3.8 out of 5.0)

Vary Pasta @ Damansara Jaya

Actually I had visited this restaurant a few time before this but didn't found anything special bout it. A friend decided to have lunch over there again and I decided to give it a try again. The place which I am referring to is located next to Atria Shopping Complex at Damansara Jaya. The name of the place is called Vary Pasta. I am going to go into detail on each and every dishes on the plate.

Spaghetti Aglio Olio
The name of the dish is called Spaghetti with Chicken Chop. The spaghetti is some sort like aglio olio type with lots of garlic and herbs. It's really tasty and appetizing as there's a lot of garlic, which I like a lot. Portion was moderate but there are more to come. But I still rather have a larger portion if possible.

French Fries
What's so special bout the fries? Well for one, I am crazy for fries. Particularly those thin crispy ones which they are serving over here. It's freshly fried and served upon order which I like a lot.

Chicken Chop with Black Pepper
The main dish on the plate is this piece of black pepper chicken chop. Portion was alright but the chicken was really tender. The taste of black pepper isn't that strong.

Spaghetti with Chicken Chop - RM 13.90
So here is the whole plate of pasta or chicken chop look like. Very nicely prepared and trust me it's really delicious. The spaghetti is good, the fries is hot and freshly fried and the portion of the chicken is alright too. The meal also come with a glass of ice lemon tea and also ice cream for dessert. You can choose for just the pasta without the drink and ice cream for RM2 lesser. So you decide. (Rating: 4.0 out of 5.0)

Yummy Duck Roast House @ Kuchai Lama

To be honest I came across this place from the paper I bought this morning. Read half way through and looking at the time, it's almost lunch hour and decided to bring the whole family over to try it out. It's a new (3 months old) restaurant called Yummy Duck which is located at Kuchai Lama (previously the night market place). Arrived around noon and the place wasn't that pack, so I was thinking if it's really as good as it's said it would be. Nevertheless, I never judge a place just on what I read. So I give it a try and see how it goes.

From what I read, the place is headed by it's director William Low and his older brother Kang Man. The former 41-year old started his food business as a commis in Regent Kuala Lumpur's Lai Ching Yuen or formerly known as Grand Millennium. He came out after two years of working with Chef Mak Thong and started off his first chicken rice stall near the Sentul market and finally ended up here after persuasion by the siblings. As the name goes, their roast duck would be the main attraction of the place but in reality people prefer their roast pork or siew yuk more.

As you can see, they served roast duck, pork, siew yuk and sliced Chinese sausage. I am not sure if they have roast chicken or not as I didn't ordered any. So let's get down to business now.

Spicy Minced Pork Pure Egg Noodle - RM 8.80
Babe wanted to try out their spicy minced pork egg noodle and the portion was really generous. It may look simple but the chili paste which they used for the noodle is not that bad. A bit oily but other than that, it's alright. As mentioned, the noodle are all imported in from Hong Kong and not made locally. So do try it.

Combo Pure Egg Noodle - RM 11.80 + RM2.80 (extra noodle)
I think this is a must order if you wanted to try out all their best roast duck and pork in the house. As you can see the portion of the noodle is really plenty as I had ordered double noodle or 'ma mee'. The waiter confirmed with us twice before he bring in the plate and I know why. Cause it's really a lot. The noodle is very tangy and not too soft and it's so thin. The noodle is really long and look uncut in between. So it's really good.

Roasted Pork Shoulder or Char Siew
Let's go into detail of the combo plate. The char siew is my favorite actually from the three. It's covered by caramelized soy coating and also the texture is so tender. I specifically ordered half lean and fat and that is what I got. Superb. Gonna be back again to try it out with plain rice next time.

Roast Pork or Siew Yuk
As I mentioned earlier, they are famous for their roast pork so I was really eager to try it out. It's not bad but maybe not as good as described. But still above average portion of roast pork. The upper layer is crispy and the salty part of the pork is marinated nicely. This is because the cook had to control the fire during the preparation nicely. As over heat will make the skin turn black and under cook will make the pork tasteless.

Roast Duck
As for the roast duck, it got the thumbs up from my SIL and babe. Strong scent of five scent and garlic powder and lam yue (red preserved bean curd) which is the base ingredients. The salt which makes the skin crispy plays a crucial part during the preparation too. So at the end, a yummy plate of roast duck.

 Dumpling in Soup
We had ordered a side dish to go with the noodle too. Their dumplings are really large and the prawn meat inside was really fresh and you can really taste the prawn inside. As I had tried some which you can't even tell if it's prawn or pork or whatever inside. Not bad. Their deep fried silver fish, soft shell crabs and chicken wings stuffed with glutinous rice are some of the popular ones over there.

At the end of our lunch, the place was totally pack till the outside. Both the brothers are preparing non stop inside the counter chopping the roast pork and duck for all the customers. Business is really good. The price isn't that expensive actually if you think of it. I mean RM11.80 for a double portion pure egg noodle with roast duck, pork and char siew. Do try the place out if you are around the area. I will definitely be back to have lunch one of this day with my lunch kakis. (Rating: 4.2 out of 5.0)

Kokopelli Travellers Bistro @ Section 14

This is a place which I had been wanted to visit for so long. It's called Kokopelli Travelers Bistro. They are formerly housed nearby University Hospital but is relocated to Section 14 I think early this year. I heard a lot about this place from floggers around town. And babe had even been to this place previously and had some good feedback from it. So I was determined to try this place out one and for all.

As you can see, the restaurant is actually a converted old mansion along Seksyen 14. They preserved everything in the house without much renovation but everything is in good condition. White is their theme and everything looked so homely if you are sitting inside. There is also a private room if you are having a party or private function. But be advice that people will come in as the toilet attached to the room is the only one in the house. Everyone was looking at me when they saw me coming in the room that night. Funny~!!

Decoration is nice and simple. They use mahjong paper placed on top of the table which I think save their time of wiping the table and changing the clothe. But a but wasting maybe.

Pasta Carbonara - RM20.90
There are a few varieties of pasta to choose from ranging from Seafood Marinara, Seafood Kinguine Aglio Olio and Primavera but as always I had choose my favorite, Carbonara. The pasta come with beef bacon & turkey ham. Sorry guys, this place is HALAL so no pork for you. To be honest I was skeptical when I first saw the pasta as it was too watery but heck it's so cream at the end of the meal. One word, delicious. Please don't order this if you can't take the thick creamy sauce.

Signature Fried Koey Teow - RM10.90
This is a MUST TRY dish from the restaurant. I heard a lot of positive feedback for their plate of Char Koey Teow. I like CKT but never tried any good one without pork lard or oil in them. But this CKT really change my mind. The CKT comes with prawns, cockles, bean sprout and chives. It's really large hence the price. It's not too wet and the taste is so darn nice. But maybe slightly heavy on the MSG maybe.

Pizza Mazor - RM10.90
I heard that their pizza was quite nice from my friend who just visited the place. So I decided to order one to share around. The boss was so nice to introduce some of their favorite dishes in the place and this pizza is one of them. It's not thin crust but there is a lot of cheese on the pizza. Nothing much special bout the pizza here or maybe we're just too full to taste it.

At the end of our dinner, the place was pack. So if you're deciding to dine in for more than 4 people, it's best to call beforehand for reservation. Overall the food is good and the service is great. The place is small and decent with good food. Definitely a nice place to have dinner with some good companion. The price for their other dishes like steaks and western food seemed a bit pricey even for the pasta but then again, the quality of the food is good and we have to look overall for the ambiance and also presentation I guess. Definitely be going back for more one of these days. (Rating: 4.0 out of 5.0)

Teo Chew Moi @ Bandar Puteri

Visited this place called Teo Chew Moi which is located at Bandar Puteri last weekend with my brother's family. It was recommended by him actually. I think he is very fond of this restaurant because of the food and also the price. As the name goes, the restaurant serve authentic Teo Chow dishes. Moi in Teo Chow means porridge. So the porridge and also rice in the restaurant are free and refillable (self service).

As you can see, there are many dishes on the tray which ranges from fried bean curd with eggs, stewed bean curd, steamed minced pork and lots more. My first impression was that the place looks like it's serving economical rice. But in a very clean and proper environment. Don't get me wrong, this is not my first visit to a Teo Chow restaurant. I had tried once before at SS14 called Teo Chow Meng which I think is quite well known too.

And here are the vegetables and also the stewed duck.

These two big bowl or pot are filled with salted vegetable which is very common in Teo Chew cuisine. After getting all the food that we wanted, we ordered our drinks and waited for the dishes to be served to our table.

This is one of my favorite dish of the day. It's pork being cooked or stewed with some mushroom. The pork is a bit scattered around but the gravy is nice and the pork is soft. I think this is too a a very common dish for them.

Cooked potatoes. Nothing special here but the potatoes are not too soft and mushy (thank God!). I like this dish although it's simple.

This is the steamed minced pork which I mentioned before. This is another common famous dish from Teo Chew. It's packed with all sort of pork meat and some other ingredient which I don't even know what. But the important thing is that it's really nice.

Stewed bean curd. Simple and nice. Again not too soft and mushy when you poke your fork into them.

We ordered two plates of green and this being one of them. Very crunchy and fresh. Maybe a bit oily.

This is the only dish which I didn't tried as I don't really like salted vegetables. Or is that what they called it? But from what my family and babe said, it's nice.

What is a meal without some eggs. So I had choose fried eggs with some bean curd in them. I think this is available in Hokkien cuisine too.

Last but not least, Thai styled Chicken. I don't think this is common anywhere but Thai but hell, I like eating fried chicken or anything fried for the matter of fact. It's not that crunchy anymore but I don't blame them. Still a bit of crispy-ness in it and I wallop the whole plate up at the end. Nice~!

As I mentioned earlier, you can opt to take the dish with white rice or porridge which is located at the side of the restaurant for you to take. It's refillable so don't get greedy and take a whole lot and wasting it at the end. The total damage for the lunch comes to RM46 for 4 adults and a kid with inclusive of drinks. I was startled when the waiter told me that, as it's like eating economy rice and paying RM10+/head for it. But then again, it's not your normal economical rice and the food is good and healthy. Environment is clean and air condition too. So it's alright if we pay a bit more for that. The place is located behind the new Public Bank at Bandar Puteri and facing the Badminton hall. There is another shop on the same row name Tian Tian Lai which I wanted to try out on my next visit. Will let you all know how it goes.
